Responsibilites of a Middle School Counselor

*Responsive Services (Helping the students directly)

*Guidance (Doing lessons in the classrooms)

*Individual Planning (Helping students with academic/career planning)

  • Assist students in analyzing and evaluating abilities, interests, skills, and achievement.
  • Guide individuals and groups through the development of educational and career/vocational plans
  • Registering students for high school
  • Assist students in making transition from home-to-school and school-to-school

*System Support (Consulting and collaborating with community, families and staff)

  • Consult and collaborate with parents and families
  • Consult and collaborate with teachers and other staff
  • Conduct training and inservice for staff and community members
  • Collect, maintain, evaluate and disseminate data as needed
  • Plan, implement, and evaluate developmental program of guidance

Professional Development: School counselors are actively involved in updating their professional knowledge and skills.

Program Management: School Counselors coordinate planning and management tasks which support the activities of a comprehensive, developmental school counseling program.

Consultation: School counselors consult with teachers and other staff members to provide and receive information on emerging needs of students to support the staff.

Community Outreach: School counselors participate in activities designed to help them become knowledgeable about business and industry, community resources and referral agencies.

Public Relations: School counselors orient staff and the community to the comprehensive, developmental school counseling program.
